Out Patient Hysterectomy – Orange County and Los
Hysterectomy, the surgical removal of the uterus, is the second most common surgical procedure for women. It may be indicated for women suffering from chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, pelvic prolapse, fibroids, uterine cancer, or abnormal uterine bleeding. With offices in Los Angeles and Orange County, Aram Bonni, M.D., believes in taking minimally invasive approach to pelvic surgery whenever possible, which is why he prefers the laparoscopic hysterectomy over its open abdominal counterpart.
Laparoscopic hysterectomy (LH) is a less invasive alternative to abdominal hysterectomy and routine vaginal hysterectomy. This procedure could be performed through a single small incision usually through the umblicus. It is called single incision laparoscopic hysterectomy (SILS). This procedure may have to be performed with multiple small incisions ( usually three). Tiny incision(s ) are made in the abdomen through which the laparoscope and surgical tools are inserted. Once the uterus is detached from its supportive ligaments, it is removed through an incision made in the vagina or by using special instruments to cut it into smaller stripes of tissue that can be delivered through the small incisions.
Supracervical Hysterectomy (Laparoscopic)
The loss of the cervix could be a concern for some women who need to undergo hysterectomy . Laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy (LSH) is a procedure in which the uterus is removed while the cervix is left behind to remain. There is no evidence for or against leaving the cervix behind with this kind of surgery. Unfortunately many surgeons perform this procedure because of the technical difficulties and lack of advanced laparoscopic skills necessary to accomplish a total laparoscopic hysterectomy. Dr. Bonni believes in proper removal of the cervix and correct suspension of the remaining vaginal vault. Only in special circumstances this procedure is done in our practice. This procedure is only recommended for those without histories of abnormal PAP smears.
